Charles Trautmann
Charlie came to Ithaca as a graduate student in engineering. While at Cornell, he and his wife Nancy (also an HBH Faculty Fellow) became firmly attached to the Finger Lakes region and decided to build their careers here. Charlie became a registered professional engineer and geologist and joined the faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering, where he taught, conducted research, and consulted to industrial and private clients.
Several years later, he accepted a position as the first executive director of the Sciencenter in Ithaca, a hands-on science museum dedicated to inspiring STEM learning in children and families. There, he managed the construction of the museum and its program, while continuing to teach engineering ethics and professional practice.
Following his retirement from the Sciencenter, Charlie joined the faculty of the Dept. of Psychology to combine his research interests in STEM, the environment, and early childhood learning in a research group called the Environment and Community Relations (EnCoRe) Lab.
Charlie enjoys tandem biking with Nancy, and together they have ridden around all 11 of the Finger Lakes. He also enjoys hiking and woodworking, serves on several non-profit boards, and volunteers for various local and national organizations.
